Bike tour around the volcano

DESCRIPTION

Full 360º turn around Etna, discovering the architecture and lifestyle in the villages located on the slopes of the highest active volcano in Europe.

The route will allow you to admire how the landscape changes depending on the slope and altitude. You will always be accompanied by the gaze of ‘Mother Etna,’ which will not leave you alone throughout the journey.

Start the tour on the southern side of the volcano from Nicolosi, named ‘the door of Etna’. The clockwise turn will bring you to Belpasso, named “the chessboard of Etna”, here we suggest you stop to taste some local delicacies at the well-known Bar Condorelli.

Continue westwards through the towns of St. Maria di Licodia, Biancavilla and Adrano, the last one is dominated by a mighty Norman castle made of lava stone.  Leaving the latter you will make your way to Bronte, where you can see a lot of pistachio trees standing on the arid and jagged lava rocks. Let yourself be tempted by the typical pistachio specialties to sweeten the ride.

After Bronte, ascend Fontanamurata, and then continue downhill to Randazzo, a wonderful medieval town situated on the north side of the volcano amidst three natural parks: Etna, Nebrodi, and Alcantara. After a visit to the village, you continue eastwards through the villages of Passopisciaro and Solicchiata, you will pedal through the vineyards and breathtaking landscapes in one of the best areas for the production of Etna wines.

Continuing to Linguaglossa, along a scenic road immersed in the woods, you reach Milo, and then downhill the village of Zafferana Etnea. Zafferana Etnea is known as the ‘city of honey,’ where you can stop for a honey tasting. If you’re feeling hungry, try another specialty: the Pizza Siciliana, a fried pizza dough filled with Tuma and anchovies.

Head south to close the loop, crossing various hamlets and villages such as Trecastagni and Pedara you reach Nicolosi, the starting point of the excursion.
